Batmunkh is an old Xaela bearing dark scales, ash-brown skin, and sharp eyes that seem haunted. His long, sleek black hair is starting to grey; he wears it up in several ponytails and braids ornamented by small leather ribbons. Wrinkled but not yet frail, he maintains his fit form with exercise. This can easily be witnessed as he wears clothing styles traditional to the Buduga tribe, which are designed for emphasizing a male's physique.

Batmunkh is a lonely man who strives to live a peaceful life— his grumpy and impatient attitude notwithstanding. He often comes across as bossy and sexist.He is a benign old man now, but within the eyes of many his past actions would qualify him as a villain. He's a veteran war tactician hardened by battle and loss. He deeply regrets the war crimes he once committed, to the point of converting himself to pacifism.Within his own assessment, and the eyes of most Au Ra of the Dawn Throne, Batmunkh is a shadow of his former self. Presently, he struggles to rebuild himself into a new, better man. His love of reading and writing, as well as the final words of his younger brother, are the only things keeping him going. He hopes that by striving for a life of peace, his soul may one day find atonement.

Part I.Batmunkh is an Au Ra of the Buduga tribe who was originally from the Adarkim tribe. When he was too young to fully remember, his parents were killed in the Naadam by the Oronir tribe; he and his half-brother were taken in together by the Buduga.He and his half-brother Buyanbat were sired by the same father but had different moms. They were born only a few months apart and both of them heavily took after their father to the point where the majority of people, themselves included, considered the two as twins. Batmunkh was older by about 5 months.They lacked strong parental figures growing up. They were raised in the collective Buduga and Oronir allied environment which was quite sexist and masculine-oriented. They were treated as brothers of the Buduga tribe, but having brother figures was not the same as a proper parental figure; as a result, they often clung to each other for familial support— later on, to a co-dependent and mildly toxic degree. Batmunkh shaped himself to be the more mature and responsible one since he was the oldest. He even developed a niche interest in reading, despite the uncommonality of books and writing on the Steppe. He especially liked reading about war tactics and folklore.While he was sometimes poked fun of for his bookish interests, he would teach Buyanbat the tactics he had learned, and the results spoke for themselves. Batmunkh himself was a decent fighter, but he liked seeing Buyanbat succeed more. His brother became a champion fighter amongst the Buduga, threatening to eventually surpass the greatest; he even dreamed of being Khan.But then one year, Batmunkh’s younger brother was slain in the Naadam. A woman of the Kahkol shot him right in the throat with an arrow. Despite choking on his own blood, he managed to tell Batmunkh to keep living, and that he loved him.
Part III.Now Batmunkh is old and lonely and writes novels. Out of guilt over his past actions, he helps look after younger males taken in by the Buduga tribe; he tries to be a positive father figure to them. He educates the few who are interested in learning to read or write. For the most part however, because of his pacifist beliefs and disdain towards the Naadam, he is simply considered as an eccentric old man fallen from his past glory.Adult survivors of the Kahkol tribe would despise him— most of all mothers who had their sons stolen from them by the Buduga—and he wouldn’t blame them for it. He fully expects that he may one day be murdered for what he did.He has Buyanbat’s name tattooed on his right shoulder blade, and extreme scarring on his lower left leg from his duel with the Rathalos. The sight of archery tends to be a trigger for him and put him in a bad mood.
Part II.Buyanbat’s death destroyed Batmunkh. Out of hatred, he plotted revenge against the tribe that killed his younger brother. He turned to books for his answers; whilst poring over various forms of combat tomes, he found one detailing the magical techniques of “egi”, where one can take the energy of a being and through arcanima reshape it into a summonable avatar. He also, around the same time, read folklore about a new species of powerful, dragon-like creature that had moved into the mountains of the Steppe, and had occasionally been sighted flying over the plains, known by the name of Rathalos.Batmunkh studied the egi technique. He plotted. He found a lone Rathalos in the mountains. The territorial creature had made a den for itself amongst the bones of lesser Rathalos. He spent several weeks studying it; he fought it, injured it— was badly injured himself. It tore into his lower leg with its spiked tail, but he managed to claim a few of the wyvern’s scales before retreating and mending his own wound. This was enough, for Batmunkh to be able to design an egi of one.He used his tamed avatar of Rathalos to unleash hellfire upon the Kahkol and contributed to the eventual downfall of their tribe. He continued using his Rathalos-egi as a tool in battle for some time; it gave the Buduga and Oronir a sizeable advantage in many of their clashes. But obviously, the revenge didn't bring his brother back. He just felt empty. Then, guilt. He realized he abhorred the cycle of violence and the Naadam, and became a pacifist.

Batmunkh's full story features numerous dark and problematic elements— all of which he was fully complicit in. Don't pry deeper or try to romance him unless you are prepared to confront very dark themes.

Batmunkh is a passionate reader and writer. After swearing himself to pacifism, he has devoted his life to writing novels then crafting them into books. Old nemesis.
Once, Batmunkh despised the Kahkol and plotted for their total destruction. After carrying out his revenge— after the Buduga laid waste to the Kahkol— a change of heart occurred in him. Members of the Kahkol tribe who know of his murderous past are not likely to care about his alleged change of heart. Unique magical talent, now largely retired.
This hook may be challenging to work with, because Batmunkh is wont to "forget" how he studied old Allagan arcanima in order to avenge his brother's death. But perhaps one heard rumors of how he once wielded the avatar of a firebreathing wyvern in battle, bringing much power and glory to the Buduga tribe; or perhaps one would notice his possession of rare metal inks conductive to the geometries of Summoning.

After Buyanbat's death, Batmunkh sought to get a black script tattoo of his brother's name on his body. His existing enthusiasm for calligraphy caused him to develop an interest in the art of tattooing as well. He apprenticed briefly under the man who tattooed him; now, Batmunkh is a decent tattoo artist of his own right, specializing in intricate script designs. Memento of his battle with an elder Rathalos.
Batmunkh's lower left leg appears gruesomely mauled. This is from his past battle with a Rathalos, during which the beast swiped him hard with its spiky clubbed tail; scales and flesh were both torn off his leg, causing permanent disfigurement. The damage did not have much impact on his ability to walk despite how brutal the scars appear. Wisdom from an aging tactician.
Fifty summers have come and gone since Batmunkh's birth. Though he has sworn off ever taking another life, he doesn't mind resurfacing his knowledge as a war tactician to teach newer generations— if only to help prevent the loss of more comrades. He also has expertise in other things, such as kharaqiq, appropriate yoga stretches for various pains, and hiking survival skills. He knows quite a bit about male anatomy too.
